Pleasure Dome: Italo Sneak

This August, the Pleasure Dome once again opens its doors to one of the undisputed heartlands of extreme cinema: We’re presenting two Italian grindhouse classics from the early ’80s that are so terrifying we don’t even dare to mention them by name… Welcome to our first sneak preview! 
For the fearless! For those who want to confront their own fears and limits in the cinema! For all fans of the explicit, the extreme, and the repulsive. As always, presented from analog, historical film prints—this time, a suitably worn-out German-dubbed "Bahnhofkino" print, as well as a rare original print with English subtitles.

What can we reveal about the films? Well: One takes us to the rural U.S. of Gothic mansions, the other to a supposedly vibrant paradise along the Amazon. Descending into the basement means facing terror head-on, just as one danger follows another behind the lush greenery of the jungle. Full-frontal exploitation. In both cases, however, there’s also a deeper layer—the “clever” ones among us can expect a nod to Freud’s metapsychology as well as a memorable meta-discussion of cinema (specifically its manipulations). For those who haven’t guessed yet, here’s a little name-dropping: With Lucio Fulci and Ruggero Deodato, we’ve invited two of the very patron saints of Italian genre cinema.
