owerpop with hooks on speed dial - 1800 MIKEY is the lo-fi garage pop\npro
ject of Michael Barker. On any given night in his home of Sydney\, Austral
ia\,\nyou might find Barker gleefully wailing away on stage with any numbe
r of local\nunderground garage punk stalwarts including Gee Tee and RMFC.
And it seems he’s\neveryone’s secret weapon for a reason – his joy on stag
e is infectious and it\ncomes across in his music. Barker’s own project le
ans more into the pop side of\nthe garage punk spectrum - with great resul
ts.\n\nIN YUN is the third 1-800-MIKEY album and the first on Goner Record
	s. And in\nterms of songwriting it’s a strong step forward. And while the
basic formula\nhere is the same – melodic bass lines\, crunchy guitar riff
s and catchy\nsing-a-long vocals – there is more going on here. The sound
is just as\nimmediate\, but also more dynamic and nuanced. Lead single “Me
and My Only” is a\nhigh speed collision of distorted city rock guitar rif
fs and\nheart-on-your-sleeve poptastic vocal hooks. If that seems like fam
iliar\nterritory\, “K Style” and “Falling in Love” are more reminiscent of
British noise\npoppers the Shop Assistants and the Pooh Sticks. And the e
arworm guitarwork\nanchoring “Pleasant Morning” and “Faery” is fresh and c
atchy - good luck getting\nthem out of your head.\n\nIt’s fun and sincere
and adorable and it totally rips.\n\n—\n\nDBR / Involved in more bands tha
n I can remember\, this guy is one of the main\ndriving forces behind that
stratospheric German punk scene we’re always talking\nabout—the same scen
e that led us to proclaim Liiek’s latest album our top pick\nlast year\, a
band he’s also part of. Now tapping into that same vibrant pulse\,\nbut e
ven more tense\, pushed to the extreme and stripped of angularity\, DBR\nu
nleashes his most killer album to date via Phantom Records. "Unbearable"—I
\nsuppose the title refers to this shitty world we’re living in\, which\,
like a\nChimera\, finds its Bellerophon in this record: capable of making
us sweat and\nforget\, at least for a while\, the damn stress reality impo
ses on us\,  fighting\nfire with real fire this time—drums\, bass\, and gu
itar— to deliver a punk record\nin the purest sense\, needing no further q
	ualifiers: raw and defiant\, powerful\,\nwith arrogant\, daring rhythmic f
	oundations\; guitars whose riffs reveal the cold\,\nhard gleam of metal\;
and vocals spat out with unleashed\, convulsive energy.\n(tremendo garaje)
